Will A Breast Lift Leave A Scar?

Most people experience some insecurity regarding one or more of their physical traits throughout various life stages. Many women are looking for a solution to address their sagging or lax breasts. Women can have sagging breasts due to their genetic makeup; after having lost a significant amount of weight and finding they have excess breast skin; as well as a result of having given birth and/or breastfeeding and witnessing their breasts change significantly. Fortunately, board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar offers these patients the procedures they need in order to regain their confidence, feel comfortable in their skin again, and be able to show off their bodies in clothes they love. For many of these patients, Dr. Adibfar performs a Breast Lift.

A Breast Lift is classified under breast augmentation, however does not require breast implants. Depending on the patient, a Breast Lift can be combined with breast implants to not only elevate the breast to a more rejuvenated position, but to also add volume. For the sake of this article, we’ll solely be looking at details concerning the Breast Lift.

While a Breast Lift is a fairly straight-forward procedure, each Breast Lift is uniquely tailored to the patient and their constitution. Depending on the patient’s chest size and amount of laxity, some women will require more excess skin removal than others. For this reason, women undergoing a Breast Lift will have different scar patterns which we’ll explain shortly. A Breast Lift will leave a scar, however they diminish greatly over time and most patients are happy to trade faint scars for a more visually appealing chest. Though rarely necessary, any residual faint scars can also be camouflage tattooed over after approximately 1 to 2 years.

Typically, there are three major scar patterns that result from having had a Breast Lift. The first is a simple scar that appears around the nipple or areola. This Breast Lift is for patients who need little to no excess skin removal, and simply require the nipple and breast gland to be lifted approximately 1 to 2 centimetres. This scar is also great because over time it blends in with the outline of the areola.

The second results in a scar pattern that appears like a “lollipop” below the nipple to the crease. This is for patients who require more excess skin removal after the nipple and breast has been lifted.

As previously mentioned, this excess skin could appear as a result of the patient’s genetic makeup, significant weight loss as well as post pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s no surprise that women’s chests can change dramatically after having given birth, and it is advised that should a patient choose to undergo a Breast Lift, that she will not be having any more children and is no longer breastfeeding. This ensures that the chest adheres to its new shape and that the scars can heal without interruption.

The third scar pattern from a Breast Lift is for women needing more excess skin removal resulting in an anchor-like scar. This involves a scar that goes around the areola, a line that goes from the bottom center of the nipple to the breast’s crease, as well as a short line along the crease. While it sounds very intimidating, it is important to remember that the scar around the areola, as well as in the breast’s crease, will be the least noticeable after the scars have fully matured.

For either of the three methods, patients should note that a Breast Lift can completely reshape the breast and provide excellent cosmetic results when performed by a board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon like Dr. Adibfar who can provide the most meticulous assessment to offer you the best results possible. While the sound of scars can sound daunting, patients of Breast Lifts are some of our most satisfied patients as they feel they no longer need to hide under their clothes, they can feel better in their skin and regain the youthful look they once had and always dreamt of.
