Get That Hourglass Figure!

Fads come and go, but one constant in the realm of beauty, fashion and fitness has always been the obsession over a female’s hourglass figure. With celebrities proudly showing off their curves all over social media, it’s no wonder women spend so much time in the gym and so much money on clothing that accentuates their voluptuous curves and slimmer waists. And while some women are more genetically predisposed to an hourglass body type, others will be happy to know that board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar can help patients achieve a more curvaceous silhouette while still honouring their natural shape!

You may have heard of the Brazilian Butt Lift (or BBL), but what you may not know is that this popular procedure involves precise techniques that should only be used by an experienced professional with a keen aesthetic eye like Toronto’s own Dr. Adibfar. When performing the Brazilian Butt Lift, Dr. Adibfar employs several techniques including fat transfer and power assisted liposuction (or PAL). Before we continue, let’s look at the difference between tradition liposuction and PAL.

Traditional liposuction is performed with a hallow metal tube (or cannula) with small apertures or holes on the end to gently suction the patient’s fat. The excess fat cells are sucked into the holes, through the cannula and away from the body. Typically, the fat is then sent through the tube to a holding canister for grafting. The cannula is held by the plastic surgeon and is usually vigorously thrusted in and out of the area where the fat is being harvested. This causes more tears and trauma to the patient’s tissues, and results in more downtime, soreness, bruising and possible discomfort during the patient’s recovery period.

Advancements in liposuction technology have risen to reduce this trauma to the fat cells, essentially allowing for easier fat harvesting and a shorter recovery period for the patient. This more recent development is referred to as PAL, a liposuction system that looks similar to the traditional cannula. This power assisted cannula moves back and forth electronically, by approximately two millimetres, making very small, more gentle movements within the patient’s tissue. This allows the plastic surgeon to expend less energy as their strong vigorous movements with the traditional cannula are no longer necessary. This power assisted cannula gently moves in and out of the body causing less trauma to the fat cells, leading to less bruising, less swelling, less pain and more efficient fat removal. This more effective, efficient and gentler liposuction is what Dr. Adibfar prefers to use.

With PAL, Dr. Adibfar is able to harvest fat from areas such as the abdomen, love handles and inner thighs and upper arms. These areas are typically parts of the body women looking for an hourglass figure want to lose fat in. Dr. Adibfar then grafts these live fat cells to be redistributed to areas of the patient’s body that require more volume for that curvy silhouette. These areas will most likely include the buttocks and hips. The result is a slimmer, more contoured waistline and a rounder, more lifted buttocks. Patients are thrilled to know that they’ll have a more curvaceous hourglass figure utilizing their own body’s fat from areas that they’d rather not carry excess weight. This grafted fat can also be transferred to accentuate other areas of the body including a female’s chest, balancing out a more curvaceous lower half.

Most female patients interested in BBL find that their abdomen and lower body are simply resistant to any change encouraged by intense exercise and strict dieting. Luckily these mentioned procedures offer a great solution! While the surgery sounds quite straightforward, patients should note that a BBL—alongside PAL and fat transfer—is certainly an artistic combination of procedures requiring a very experienced and skilled board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon like Toronto’s Dr. Adibfar. Once fully healed, patients are absolutely thrilled with their newly-restored confidence and curvaceous figure!
