How to balance and enhance your face with facial implants

With the advancements in plastic surgery, issues like a small chin, weak jaw, or lack of facial contour can now be fixed by facial implants. Facial implants can bring balance and better proportion to the structural appearance of your face.

What is a facial implant?

Compatible with human tissues, facial implants are specially formed solid materials designed to augment and/or enhance the physical structure of your face. During the initial consultation with Dr. Ali Adibfar, the size and type of the facial implant will be discussed according to your goals and needs.

In theory, any area of your face can be augmented with facial implants. However, the most common sites for facial implants are the chin, jaw, and malar area.

Let’s take a closer look at some popular facial implant options available to you:

Chin implants increase the size and projection of your chin. This can address areas that might not be in proportion to the forehead and mid-face. A small or dipped chin can also be described as one that almost disappears into the neck.

Jaw implants increase the width of the lower third of a patient’s face. A weak jaw can take the form of being not well defined or distinct from the neck. It could also be one that slopes inward rather than angles from the ear to the chin.

Cheek implants increase the projection of the cheekbones by adding volume to areas that may be sunken or flat.

Who is the perfect candidate?

Are you considering facial implants? Below are some of the most common reasons patients from across Toronto come to Dr. Adibfar and his cosmetic plastic surgery team for facial implant procedures:

1. They have a weak, declining chin and wish to improve the appearance of their profile by increasing the projection of their chin

2. They have an undefined jawline that does not frame their face or distinguish their neck

3. They wish to improve the definition and plumpness of their cheeks

4. They wish to restore lost contour and proportion of their face due to natural aging

5. They wish to correct facial deformities resulting from injury or inborn conditions

During the initial consultation with Dr. Ali Adibfar, he will discuss all possible options available to you. Together you and Dr. Adibfar will identify the best procedure to improve your overall appearance. There are various alternatives that can modify the structure of your face. Along with facial implants, your Toronto plastic surgeon might also discuss options such as fat grafting, bone repositioning, and dermal fillers.

What to expect after the surgery?

1. Immediately following facial implant surgery:

You will experience some bruising and swelling, with mild discomfort for a day or two. Dr. Ali Adibfar and our cosmetic plastic surgery team will make sure that your postoperative experience is as comfortable as possible. You may be restricted to a liquid-only diet for one or two days. On the day of the surgery, you will be able to move on your own, however some of your activities will be restricted.

2. Recovery time frame after facial implants:

It is vitally important that you follow all patient care instructions provided by Dr. Ali Adibfar and his cosmetic plastic surgery team. This will include wearing compression garments, care of your drains if placed, taking antibiotics if prescribed and paying attention to the level and type of activity that is safe. Dr. Ali Adibfar will also provide detailed instructions about the normal symptoms you will experience and any potential signs of complications. It is important to realize that the amount of time it takes for recovery varies among all patients.

3. The first two weeks:

You should be able to return to work and other normal activities within a week. Dr. Adibfar recommends that for at least the first week you recline in a face up position at a 45-degree angle while sleeping. Stitches will be removed in five to ten days and sutures placed inside the mouth will dissolve in a similar period of time.

4. Week two to eight:

After four to six weeks, dynamic physical activity can be resumed and you can thoroughly enjoy your improved appearance.
