A Safe BBL Explained

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A BBL refers to a Brazilian Butt Lift, a cosmetic plastic surgery that has become vastly popular over the last decade with the rise of social media and celebrities taking pride in their more hourglass shapes. The procedure is a two-part surgery that involves liposuction, as well as fat grafting to the buttocks for more projection and an increase in size and enhancement. Patients are almost always thrilled with their transformation however a BBL performed by an unqualified surgeon can lead to dangerous risks.

At Elements Spa, board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar practices the safest protocols and techniques to give his patients the trunk of their dreams. Let’s take a look at the procedure and how it is performed safely, as well as the risks when performed by an inexperienced surgeon.

Liposuction

A BBL first includes liposuction. This liposuction is typically done around the lower or top of the abdomen, as well as the upper and lower back and side flanks  phasize the hourglass shape. Liposuction can also be done along the inner thighs and upper arms if necessary. Once the patient’s fat cells are suctioned from the gentle cannula, the fat is held in a canister to sit and separate. This harvested fat is then processed and placed into a syringe to be reinjected into the trunk to create a more shapely bottom.

To emphasize the hourglass shape, liposuction creates a slimmer and more tapered waist which then transitions into beautiful rounder buttocks. Utilizing the patient’s own fat makes the procedure safer and allows for more natural-looking results.

BBL Recovery

Recovery will vary from patient to patient however basic post-operative guidelines include refraining from sitting or laying on your back as well as using the first week to tend only to your own needs. Help during this time would also be ideal.

Patients are typically encouraged to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks to also aid with liposuction results and after the first week, patients can begin engaging in lighter exercise. It’s incredibly important to follow these detailed instructions because the reinjected fat is looking to assimilate in its new home in the buttocks and any pressure can undermine the results.

As previously mentioned, BBLs have become wildly popular in the last decade and are performed globally. Because of this trend, many want to be able to perform BBLs on their patients, even if they’re not qualified or haven’t received the appropriate training. This lends itself to many serious health issues and side effects. It’s important to note that reinjected fat should not be inserted far into the buttocks, specifically into the muscle. Fat injected deep into the muscle can make its way to a vein causing a whole host of serious health issues. Fat must be injected conservatively and outside the muscle for the safest results. For these reasons, it’s always best that patients educate themselves and know who their surgeons are and where they were trained. This could not only make a big difference to your results but most importantly to your overall health.
